Material AI LLC ("Material," "we," "us," or "our") respects your privacy. This policy explains how we collect, use, and share information when you visit materialcompany.ai, use the Materiality Test, or contact us through the site.

Information we collect

Information you provide. The Materiality Test asks you to describe a business problem or decision in your own words and to answer questions about its potential value, scale, evidence, workflow, data, ownership, risks, differentiation, and readiness. If you choose to answer a follow-up question, we collect that answer too. Your responses may include personal or confidential information if you choose to enter it. We also receive the information you send when you email us, including your contact details and the contents of your message.

Information generated by the test. The test produces a recommendation and a personalized explanation based on your answers. We may process the answers, follow-up prompts and answers, generated results, and related reference or interaction information needed to operate and improve the test.

Technical information. When you visit or use the site, our hosting and security services may receive information such as your IP address, browser and device details, pages requested, time of access, and error or security logs. Cookies or similar technologies may be used where needed to operate, secure, or understand the performance of the site. Your browser settings may let you control cookies.

You can browse the site without completing the Materiality Test. The test does not require you to enter your name or email address. If you select “Send this to Material,” your email application opens with a draft containing your result; the email is sent to us only if you choose to send it.

Avoid including sensitive personal data, trade secrets, or confidential client information unless you are comfortable with that information being processed as described here. Using the public test does not create a client relationship or a confidentiality agreement with Material.

How the AI feature works

The Materiality Test uses Anthropic's AI technology to help formulate a follow-up question and create a personalized analysis. When you enter the initial description of your business problem, we may send that text to our server and Anthropic to generate the follow-up question. When you complete the test, we may send your answers and any follow-up response to Anthropic to generate the analysis. Anthropic processes that content on our behalf to provide the AI feature. The test may still display a rules-based recommendation if personalized analysis is unavailable.

Anthropic states that inputs and outputs from its commercial API are not used to train its models by default, subject to its published terms, settings, and exceptions. Anthropic's processing and retention practices are described in its commercial data-retention information and model-training information. We do not promise that information submitted to the public test is confidential or subject to a zero-retention arrangement.

AI-generated results can be incomplete or inaccurate. Please review them before relying on them for a business decision.

When we share information

We share information with service providers that help us host, secure, maintain, and operate the site and test, including Anthropic for the AI feature. These providers may process information under their applicable agreements with us. We may also disclose information when required by law, to protect rights or safety, or as part of a business transaction such as a merger or sale, subject to applicable law.

We do not publish your individual Materiality Test responses or results through the test. If you choose to email your result to us, the email and its contents will be available to Material and to the email services used to deliver it.

How long we keep information

We keep information for as long as reasonably needed to provide the site and test, respond to inquiries, maintain security and business records, and meet legal obligations. Retention depends on the type of information and why it was collected. Information sent to Anthropic is also subject to its applicable retention practices. You can ask us about or request deletion of information associated with you using the contact details below; we will respond as required by applicable law. We may not be able to identify a test submission from a request unless you provide enough information to locate it.

Your choices and rights

You may choose not to use the Materiality Test, leave optional answers blank where the test allows, or contact us directly by email. You may ask to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you, or raise a privacy concern. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under applicable privacy law. Contact us at the address below and we will respond in accordance with applicable law. You may need to provide information so we can verify your request.

Security and international processing

We use reasonable measures intended to protect information, but no internet service can guarantee absolute security. Material and its providers may process information in the United States or other locations where they operate. Those locations may have different privacy laws from your location.

Children

The site and Materiality Test are intended for business audiences and are not directed to children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as our site, services, or practices change. We will post the revised policy here with a new effective date. If a change requires additional notice under applicable law, we will provide it.
